The History of Trampolines
Although they may be common sights in circuses and gardens during the summer, the exact origin of the Trampoline is a mystery. Although the word 'Trampoline' comes from the Mexican word 'el trampolino', the word actually means 'diving board'. It is though that the idea of using a material to bounce on originated with the Eskimos who used walrus skins to hurl each other into the air. However the 'Trampoline' that we know today was devised during the 1930s, when inventor George Nissan came up with the idea of a device that allowed people to bounce, after seeing trapeze artists bounce on safety netting after performing acrobatics.
Nissen is credited with being the man behind the Trampoline as we know it today, however a circus performer and trapeze artist called Du Trampolin is also credited with developing the idea of a safety net being used to propel people into the air as well as being used for a landing pad.
